چکیده

Cumulative settlement is one of the primary potential detrimental aspects of rocking foundations. It has been well documented that if the factor of safety against bearing failure is not very large (e.g., less than five or so), settlement can become significant. A series of footings of different shapes were subject to lateral slow cyclic loading on the centrifuge to study the effect of shape on footing settlement. Previous studies have characterized the shape of rectangular footings by the ratio of width to length of the loaded area required to support the vertical load. For the present study, the I-shaped footings are characterized by their missing area ratio and the normalized flange or web thickness. A systematic relationship between normalized footing settlements and footing shape was observed. Narrow footings produced more settlement than wide footings under the same rotation demand.

Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations on Cohesionless Soils: A Random Forest Based Approach

Determining the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) is vital for design of shallow foundations. Recently, soft computing methods (i.e. artificial neural networks and support vector machines) have been used for this purpose. In this paper, Random Forest (RF) is utilized as a tree-based ensemble classifier for predicting the UBC of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils. The inputs of model are wi...

Behavior of Model Circular Footings on Silty Soils with Cellular Supports

An experimental study of the effect of silt and influence of cell confinement on the bearing capacity of circular footings on silty sand was carried out. Laboratory experiments on clean sand and sand containing silt up to 25 % were performed. Cells with different heights and diameters were used to confine the silty sand. The effect of proportion of silt in sand, cell diameter, cell height and t...

Prediction of Spread Foundations’ Settlement in Cohesionless Soils Using a Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization-Based ANN Approach

Proper estimation of foundation settlement is a crucial factor in designing shallow foundations. Recent literature shows the applicability of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in predicting the settlement of shallow foundations. However, conventional ANNs have some drawbacks: getting trapped in local minima and a slow rate of learning. Utilization of an optimization algorithm such as Particle S...

Bearing Capacity of Triangular Shell Foundations Adjacent to the Reinforced Sandy Slopes

This paper investigates response of triangular shell strip footings situated on the sandy slope. A series of reduced-scale plate load tests were conducted to cover different parameters including three shell footing types with different apex angles in addition to a flat footing, four different distances for strip footings from the crest of the slope namely “edge distance” and reinforcement statu...

Use of Minimax Probability Machine Regression for Modelling of Settlement of Shallow Foundations on Cohesionless Soil

This article examines the performance of Minimax Probability Machine Regression (MPMR) for prediction of settlement(s) of shallow foundation on cohesionless soil. MPMR maximizes the minimum probability that future predicted outputs of the regression model will be within some bound of the true regression function. Width of footing (B), net applied pressure (q), average Standard Penetration Test ...
